Welcome
to our holiday apartment "Unter den Reben" (Beneath the Vines) in Niederkirchen bei Deidesheim. Spring of 2020 we renovated the ground floor of the house and converted it into a holiday apartment with three spacious and well-equipped rooms for two to four non-smoking guests. We do not allow pets.
Our location is an ideal base for exploring this beautiful region, known as the Tuscany of Germany. We are on the picturesque wine road (Weinstraße) and the edge of the peaceful Palatinate forest (Pfälzerwald), both of which stretch down to the French border at Wissembourg and are full of things to do and see.
Whether on foot, bicycle, mountain-bike, motorcycle, or in your car or by train, the possibilities for exploring this marvellous region are endless.
Browse the pages and photos, and allow yourself to be enticed to come stay with us a while. We look forward to hosting you!
Niederkirchen???
Never heard of it!
What a pity, but we can hardly expect visitors to know this little wine-growing village - not many foreign guests travel to this part of Germany. Other, better known areas tend to attract more visitors from overseas. However, the Palatinate is an outstandingly beautiful region - family-run vineyards, vast, quiet woods, picturesque villages, historic castles, impressive rock outcrops - yet without the crowds of more touristic areas. It can be reached easily in a day's drive from the channel ports or by train in about 90 minutes from Frankfurt airport.
The people in this part of Germany are friendly and laid-back, keen to enjoy life, and love local cooking and the local wines - which have improved greatly in quality and diversity in the last few decades, but are still amazingly cheap.
The Weinstrasse runs north-south through the region, dividing it into an area of seemingly endless green leafy woods to the west and the vineyards and agricultural fields to the east, from the foothills down to the river Rhine. The villages along the Weinstrasse are touristic gems, picture-postcard perfect, with old timbered buildings, flowers and vines in abundance, and with a density of culinary and wine-lovers' opportunities among the best in the world.
Niederkirchen was first mentioned in chronicles from 699, and the square church tower dates from the second half of the 11th century. It is a quiet village concerned mostly with wine production, and has a fine reputation for Sekt - sparkling wines. Hobbits would love it.
The village lies just a mile from Deidesheim, half way between Bad Dürkheim and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. We are blessed with a couple of really good butchers, bakers and restaurants that are a short walk from the house. Two long-distance cycle paths run through the village, and the hills with all their mountain bike trails are just half a mile away. Motorcyclists and car drivers can explore the many wonderful routes through the woods and wine villages starting right here.
Deidesheim has supermarkets, a railway station, and plenty more restaurants ranging from the simple to the exclusive.
Ramblers will appreciate the proximity and aparently inexhaustible number of possible walks in the area. The Pfälzerwald is a prime destination for walkers from the nearby towns of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen (just 20 minutes drive away). Well-marked routes, guidance apps and huts providing cheap food and drink at close intervals make the experience special.
So come stay with us a while and get to know this lovely region!
